New instructor at SUN Tech brings new goals for advanced wood program

SUN Tech Institute is introducing Bryan Seward this year as new instructor for the Advanced Wood and Welding Program. Moving right out of working in the industry and into the classroom, he has come fresh ideas for the program. One of his main goals is to increase interest and enrollment in the program as this program has historically had a lower enrollment rate than others at the school. He has plans to increase awareness involve making more connections with the sending schools and opening up the program facility for tours. Another goal for the program is to align the curriculum to satisfy what local industry professionals are searching for in employees. A large factor of this is making sure equipment is current and students have ample training with all equipment. To do this, new technology based machines will need to be gained and make better use of the equipment that is already available, like the Shopbot CNC Router. Beginning this fall the program will be introducing their new Handibot CNC Router, a smaller CNC unit that will allow students to learn CNC at a worktable before they learn the larger unit. Finishing techniques will also become more of a focus throughout the next few years and incorporate LEAN manufacturing. Also in the future are hopes of displaying students’ work in the shop to show visitors (and potential employers) what the students are capable of. We are looking forward to staying up to date with this great program and keeping KWPA members in the know of the progress!...

Spotted Lanternfly threatens southeastern PA hardwoods

The PA Department of Agriculture is launching a statewide campaign to increase awareness of the Spotted Lanternfly. The Spotted Lanternfly is currently only found in Southeastern PA, and we’re hoping to keep it that way! It is a major threat to some of our most valuable commodities, including: hardwoods, grapes, hops, stone fruits, apples, etc. Early detection is vital to control this invasive pest and protect Pennsylvania’s agriculture and natural resources-related businesses. Have you seen this bad bug? We need your help to stop the #SpottedLanternfly from spreading. It’s currently found only in southeastern Pennsylvania, but it’s an excellent traveler! It’s a major threat to our state’s $12 billion hardwoods industry. If you see it, report it! Visit www.agriculture.pa.gov/spottedlanternflyalert for information on what to look for and how to report your sightings.  ...

KWPA shirts a success at Gilson’s Summer Snow Day

We recently attended Gilson’s Summer Snow Day event where we revealed our new KWPA tshirts! We were able to talk with many people about KWPA and invited them to sign up for our monthly newsletter, The Grain. Throughout the day we randomly chose a name to raffle off one of the new shirts. They were a big hit so stay tuned for future opportunities to get one! A big thanks to Gilson for hosting the event – we were stoked to be part of it....

KWPA members working together for the Young Americans program

We are always excited to see what our members are doing to grow their businesses and organizations in the industry. However, we are even more excited to see when they are investing in the community and giving back. For example, just last week we had three of our members all involved in the same fundraising event! The Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (a valued KWPA member) hosted its 16th Annual GSVCC Golf Classic while Ag Choice Farm Credit and Wood-Mode, two additional KWPA members, were Hole & Tee Partners for the event. The press release states, “The Annual Golf Classic is a special fundraising event to help support and promote the Young Americans program, an initiative that recognizes future leaders within 12 of our local private and public schools.” Way to go, members!
